ayv-community-logo

As of July 17, 2015, the Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) website will be changing and the AYV Community features will no longer be available, which includes the ability to login to access to the Forums, Media Review, and Member Directory.

This was a great community. When I first started teaching online — all my digital media classes were how to use this program or that program. I would have to update my course each year b/c new versions of the software came out…this took a lot of work and sometimes I fell behind. When I came across AYV website a few years ago I changed the way my digital media classes were taught — instead of learning how to use specific software – I taught concepts of digital design, animation, movie production etc. The AVY had a lot of resources that I could tap into. I adapted many of the lessons to fit my needs. I found by using the resources below help my students be more productive and creative.

Below are the resources that are available from AYV (https://youthvoices.adobe.com/community/resources):

List Poem Activity Plan – A storytelling activity that is designed to give participants an opportunity to work collaboratively on creating a storyboard of a group poem using basic art supplies.

Windows Activity Plan – A hands-on self-portrait activity designed to reinforce the basic elements of design as well as story development. Using basic art supplies, participants will work collaboratively to create a collage that explore who they are and what they want to accomplish.

Simple Techniques for Capturing Quality Audio Video Tutorial* – Capturing audio can be easy and fun, but it requires some simple techniques. No matter what gear you have, if you’re working with or without microphones, indoor or outdoors, it’s important to be creative and remember that sound is very important. Do everything you can to maximize the gear you have, without it getting in the way. In this video you’ll learn simple techniques that will help you capture better audio. (http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-adobe-youth-voices/simple-techniques-for-capturing-quality-audio/)

Stories in Motion: Stop Motion Animation Curriculum – Participants will use Adobe Premiere Elements or other animation capturing software to create a three-minute group stop motion animation project that addresses a problem or issue and provides possible solutions. Participants will explore the issues that matter most to them and create an engaging way to reach an audience. Adult facilitators will help participants utilize media tools in a coherent and meaningful way.

Media Mash Up Activity Plan – A media literacy activity that explores messaging by manipulating advertisements using Photoshop Elements.

Writing Prompts Handout – A list of interesting prompts that will encourage creative writing and reflection. This activity can be taken further by having young people storyboard what they write, share their pieces and receive feedback, or have them use their writings as starting point for a brainstorm.

Storyboard Template Handout – A pre-production tool that can be used to illustrate key scenes and shots in a media work with written explanation, narration or other directions.

Field Production Checklist Handout – This production checklist outlines the tasks media artists should consider before going out on a production shoot, during a shoot, and afterwards.

Shot Composition Handout – A great introductory handout that illustrates good shot composition strategies and reviews the different camera shots and angles.

Critical Response Handout – AYV believes that the best youth media, and the best learning experience for young people, comes from careful reflection and revision throughout the creative process. Young people need to be encouraged to think deeply about their own work and the works of others, to provide useful feedback and critique, and to continually explore how to improve upon works so that they can have the greatest impact on their intended audience. The Critical Response Technique is one way to help foster this reflective approach. The Critical Response Handout can be used by youth to help guide them through the process when viewing media and giving feedback.

Story, Audience, Message, and Style (SAMS) Handout – When watching media, it helps to have a shared language that you can use to understand and critique the work. This “SAMS” (Story, Audience, Message, Style) worksheet can help you discuss key points about the media with each other.

What I Learned Activity Plan – A field production activity where participants create a media work about a memorable learning moment. This activity reinforces the importance of good planning and having a strong story as well as teaches the basics of production.

Editing Fundamentals and Glossary Handout – Outlines editing tips and tricks, includes a robust glossary of editing terminology.

Media File Types Handout – Reviews the basic terminology for working with and managing different file types and breaks down each file format for Audio, Image, Video, and Document Files.

Sense of Place Activity Plan – A scaffolding exercise that introduces participants to shot composition and camera techniques by having them tell the story of a location, object, or moment in time using digital photography.

Inside/Out Activity Plan – A production scaffolding exercise that introduces participants to the entire production process as they work on a video poem that explores who they are on the inside and out.

The Interview Process Handout – A guide to planning and shooting a successful interview.

Audio and Sound Exercises – A list of simple audio exercises that introduce youth artists to the importance of audio and sound design.

Field Audio Handout – Reviews the basics of capturing good audio and introduces the different types of microphones.

Video Treatment Handout – One of the most neglected tools in the videographer’s tool kit is usually the video treatment, a document that defines the concept, summarizes the story and determines the creative approach of your video. A well-written video treatment takes the light bulb glowing over your head and makes it visible to others. It’s an important tool that will help plan and convey your project.

Video Scavenger Hunt Activity Plan – A collaborative camera handling scaffolding activity that asks participants to capture a variety of shots, experimenting with different camera angles.

Video Alphabet Soup Activity Plan – A collaborative camera handling scaffolding activity that asks participants to capture a variety of shots, experimenting with different perspectives and angles.

Artist Feedback Worksheet – This worksheet includes prompts that help artists capture the feedback they receive during a Rough Cut Review from the audience as well as a checklist for project revisions.

Project Synopsis Worksheet – The Project Synopsis for a media work consists of Title, Style, Length, Theme, Artist Name, and a summary statement of 3 or more sentences about the project. Use this worksheet to help youth artists share their ideas and then combine the parts into a synopsis of their media work.

Preparing for Exhibition Handout – This sample timeline serves as a guide for thinking about and planning your own exhibition events.

Rough Cut Review Sample Agenda – While there is no one way to facilitate Rough Cut Review, this sample agenda illustrates the process. Use the Rough Cut Review Presentation in tandem with this agenda to help you plan for an effective session.

How to Host an Exhibition Guide – From setting up an exhibition event to documenting the activities, this guide reviews the essentials for hosting a successful exhibition event.

Create with Purpose Media Reviewing Tool – When reviewing youth media work in process, look for elements tied to the Create with Purpose criteria. Consider everything that the audience sees, hears, and/or understands as they experience the work. Use this tool to generate ideas and questions to guide the revision and polishing of work for the greatest impact.

Create with Purpose Guide – This guide was developed as a way to assist youth and educators in understanding the elements that define the Create with Purpose philosophy.

Adobe Youth Voices Program Guide – The AYV Program Guide, designed for desktop or tablet, is intended to both orient and support educators who are planning and implementing creative media projects with young people. The Guide presents a vibrant road map for the learning experience and provides educators with planning tools, examples, and tips for launching and sustaining effective youth media programs. It encourages educators to develop their own approach, with inspiration from an array of instructional materials, embedded video tutorials, and sample youth works from around the globe.
